La canzone è stata scritta dalla stessa Morissette con Glen Ballard, che ne è stato anche il produttore. La canzone è stata scelta come primo singolo estratto dall’album il 7 luglio 1995.

La canzone ha successivamente vinto due Grammy Awards come Miglior Canzone Rock e Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Inoltre ha ricevuto una nomination per un Grammy Award come canzone dell’anno.

Nella registrazione di You Oughta Know Flea e Dave Navarro dei Red Hot Chili Peppers hanno suonato rispettivamente il basso e la chitarra.
